Where have all the good men('s sewing patterns) gone
eighty-three of the best male & unisex sewing patterns for you to make this weekend
Basically all of the sewists I follow on Instagram identify as female. That means I barely ever see men’s patterns being recommended. Or really any masculine clothes —it’s just pretty dresses galore!
But I have guys in my life who either want to sew themselves or want me to sew something for them. And whenever this situation occurs, I struggle to remember or recommend any men’s or unisex patterns. If you’re in the same boat, this newsletter is for you!
I’ve spent many, many hours trawling the internet for quality patterns, and I can now say I have a solid list to recommend. Some of these patterns I’ve made, some I haven’t but would love to try.
If you have any patterns you love, please add a comment to this post to help me and other readers discover new gems! Also, if you’ve made any of these, I would love to hear your reviews in the comments!!
Just a heads-up: This newsletter is a bit on the longer side! If you're reading via email, you might see a ‘View Entire Message’ prompt at the bottom—click that to keep reading. Or, for the best experience, open it in the Substack app (my favourite way to read these).

Sewists to follow for inspiration!
If you’re looking for masculine, non-binary and gender-fluid sewing inspiration, I’d recommend following these people!

I hope this list is useful to you, and please feel free to share it far and wide if you think it would be helpful to someone else!
If you have any recommendations, please drop them in the comments—let’s build the ultimate sewing pattern database together!
Great list! I noticed you are missing the Fairfield button up from Thread Theory. I haven’t used it but I know others have and love it.
You have the vest from Helen’s Closet but that designer has a few gender neutral designs: Jackson (tee and sweatshirt), Cameron (button up), and the new Spindrift jacket.
A designer missing completely is Tropical Research and he has many gender neutral/masculine patterns for shirts, pants, jackets. He currently has a very interesting button up design he is working on that will be a great addition to what’s available.
Lastly I highly recommend checking out the Threadloop web app. It features a crowd sourced pattern database that is filterable/searchable, as well as crowd sourced, curated pattern lists. The app is free with some paid features, but the pattern database is fully accessible to free members.
